Job Description

Managing Director, Philanthropy & External Affairs

Location: Hybrid | Boston, MA preferred
Salary: $120,000–$140,000, commensurate with experience

About Kids in Tech

Kids in Tech equips young people with the skills and confidence to succeed in a technology-driven world through hands-on STEAM programming.

We are entering a significant growth phase, including the launch of a public-facing STEM Innovation Lab in Boston's Seaport, alongside a broader strategy for program expansion, organizational growth, and long-term sustainability.

The Opportunity

Kids in Tech is seeking a Managing Director, Philanthropy & External Affairs to lead philanthropic revenue growth and external positioning for the organization.

Working closely with the CEO, this leader will build and execute a diversified philanthropic strategy, cultivate and secure major and transformational gifts, expand corporate and foundation partnerships, and help shape and execute a significant multi-year comprehensive campaign supporting Kids in Tech's next phase of growth.

This is a senior, externally facing leadership role for a builder who can develop strategy, cultivate relationships, create a strong fundraising pipeline, and close significant funding.

What You'll Lead

Philanthropy & Revenue Growth

  • Develop and lead a diversified philanthropic revenue strategy across major and individual giving, foundations, corporate philanthropy, and other private philanthropic sources.

  • Build and manage a strong fundraising pipeline with clear targets and accountability.

  • Personally cultivate, solicit, and secure significant gifts and strategic investments.

  • Establish revenue goals, forecasts, pipeline targets, and performance benchmarks in partnership with the CEO.

Comprehensive Campaign

  • Partner with the CEO and campaign advisors to assess campaign readiness and establish an ambitious, evidence-based campaign goal.

  • Develop campaign strategy, donor segmentation, cultivation pathways, prospect strategies, and measurable fundraising targets.

  • Develop compelling campaign materials and cases for investment.

  • Help activate the Board of Directors in prospect identification, introductions, cultivation, solicitation, and campaign activity.

Partnerships & External Relations

  • Build high-value relationships across corporate, philanthropic, civic, and education sectors.

  • Represent Kids in Tech at events, convenings, and stakeholder meetings.

  • Strengthen the organization's visibility and positioning across Boston and beyond.

Donor Strategy & Fundraising Infrastructure

  • Build a disciplined prospect identification and research function.

  • Develop donor stewardship and engagement strategies that strengthen retention and create pathways to increased giving.

  • Build strong fundraising systems, including CRM practices, moves management, pipeline reporting, forecasting, and stewardship tracking.

  • Maximize the CEO's fundraising engagement through prospect strategy, briefing materials, asks, and follow-up.

External Communications & Brand

  • Lead external communications, storytelling, marketing, and brand positioning.

  • Translate program outcomes and organizational impact into compelling donor, partner, and public-facing narratives.

  • Oversee donor and stakeholder communications, including impact reports, newsletters, campaign communications, and stewardship materials.

Team Leadership

  • Build and lead the development and external relations function as Kids in Tech grows.

  • Establish clear KPIs, reporting systems, and accountability structures.

  • Define the team structure and hiring roadmap needed to scale the function.

You Might Be a Great Fit If You...
  • Have personally cultivated, solicited, and closed significant gifts or funding commitments.

  • Have built or substantially expanded a fundraising pipeline rather than solely managed an established portfolio.

  • Have experience leading or playing a significant role in a comprehensive, capital, or major growth campaign.

  • Are comfortable engaging senior executives, major donors, funders, civic leaders, and other external stakeholders.

  • Can translate mission and impact into compelling funding opportunities.

  • Have built or scaled a development, philanthropy, or partnerships function.

  • Thrive in fast-moving, high-growth environments.

  • Combine strategic thinking with strong execution and follow-through.

We welcome candidates whose fundraising experience comes from nonprofit philanthropy, political campaigns, higher education, healthcare, advocacy, or other relationship-driven fundraising environments.

This Is a Builder Role

This is not a fundraising coordination or support position. The Managing Director will have meaningful ownership and accountability for philanthropic revenue growth and must bring demonstrated experience building relationships, developing pipelines, securing funding, and translating strategy into measurable results.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary: $120,000–$140,000

  • Health, dental, and vision benefits

  • Generous PTO

  • Hybrid flexibility

Equal Opportunity

Kids in Tech is an equal opportunity employer. We strongly encourage applications from individuals from underrepresented backgrounds.

Cover letter prompt

Please submit a cover letter (approximately 1–2 pages) explaining your interest in Kids in Tech and this role. Rather than restating your résumé, please address the following:

1. Fundraising results: Describe one or two significant gifts, grants, or funding commitments that you personally played a leading role in cultivating, soliciting, and closing. Please include the approximate amount, type of funder, your specific role, and how you moved the opportunity from prospect to commitment.

2. Building a philanthropic pipeline: Share an example of a fundraising pipeline or development function that you built or substantially expanded. What did you inherit, what did you change, and what measurable results followed?

3. Campaign experience: Describe your experience with a comprehensive, capital, or major growth campaign. What was the campaign goal, what did you personally own, and what were the results?

4. Kids in Tech: Based on what you understand about Kids in Tech and our next phase of growth, what excites you about the opportunity to build our philanthropic and external affairs function?
